Veltassa (patiromer) is a medicine that binds itself to potassium in your digestive tract. This helps prevent your body from absorbing too much potassium. Patiromer also helps your body get rid of excess potassium through your stools (bowel movements). Veltassa is used to treat hyperkalemia (high levels of potassium in your blood). Veltassa works differently from other medicines because it passes through your stomach and into your intestines without being absorbed into your blood stream. Avoid use of Veltassa if you have severe constipation, bowel obstruction or impaction. Veltassa may be not work effectively and may worsen your condition. Learn more

Along with its needed effects, patiromer (the active ingredient contained in Veltassa) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking patiromer:

More common

  • Drowsiness
  • loss of appetite
  • mood or mental changes
  • muscle spasms (tetany) or twitching
  • nausea
  • seizures
  • trembling
  • unusual tiredness or weakness
  • vomiting

Some side effects of patiromer may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Gastrointestinal

Common (1% to 10%): Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, flatulence

Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Vomiting

Hypersensitivity

Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Edema of the lips

Metabolic

Common (1% to 10%): Hypomagnesemia, hypokalemia

Other

Common (1% to 10%): Approximately 4.7% of patients in clinical trials developed hypokalemia with a serum potassium value less than 3.5 mEq/L. Approximately 9% of patients in clinical trials developed hypomagnesemia with a serum magnesium value less than 1.4 mg/dL.
