Naftifine is an antifungal medicine that prevents fungus from growing on your skin. Naftin (for use on the skin) is used to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm infections. Naftin is for use in adults and children who are at least 12 years old. Naftin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Along with its needed effects, naftifine topical (the active ingredient contained in Naftin) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking naftifine topical:

Less common

  • Burning, stinging, itching, redness, or irritation of the skin

Incidence not known

  • Blistering or crusting of the skin
  • softening of the skin

Some side effects of naftifine topical may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

The most common side effect reported with the 2% cream was pruritus. The most common side effects reported with the 2% gel were application site reactions.


Common (1% to 10%): Burning/stinging, dryness, erythema, pruritus/itching

Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Rash, skin tenderness

Postmarketing reports: Redness/irritation, erythema/redness, irritation, burning, blisters, crusting, dryness, mild pruritus/itching, rash


Common (1% to 10%): Local irritation, application site reactions


Postmarketing reports: Inflammation, maceration, swelling, serous drainage, pain


Postmarketing reports: Leukopenia, agranulocytosis

Nervous system

Postmarketing reports: Headache, dizziness, burning sensation
